Your department, or any department you are familiar with, has expanded to where the span of control is no longer met for
you as the fire chief. As the chief executive of your department, your intention is to present a new deputy chief position as
part of the budget preparation process. For this position, you will need to review the deputy chief job descriiption you created
in Unit IV.
This project will consist of two parts.
First, you will create a justification document explaining why this position is needed and how you intend to pay for it. The
audience for your justification document is the local government manager (e.g., mayor, city manager, township
administrator) and the town council (e.g., city council, board of trustees.) You must thoroughly sell this position and justify
why it is necessary for the success of your department. Your justification should also include:
how budgeting for this position will affect community stakeholders (e.g., government, taxpayers), and
how budgeting for this position reflects community goals.
Second, you will create a line-item budget for the position outlining the initial startup costs along with any continuing costs
that will occur as a result of this new position.
Project the costs for this position for the next 5 years.
Calculate both operational (e.g., salary, benefits) and capital costs (e.g., vehicle, equipment) costs for the position.
This sample line-item budget can be used to help you decide how to lay out your budget. You may do research to find other
examples to help you create your own. You may use Microsoft Word and/or Excel to create the budget. If you choose to use
Excel for the budget and Word for the explanation, you must upload both files in Blackboard. Be sure both files are uploaded
before you click to submit. If you choose to use Word for both parts, ensure each are on separate pages within the same
Word document.
Your justification document and line-item budget will each be at least one page in length, for a minimum total of two pages
for the project.
You must use a minimum of one source other than your textbook to support your justification. All sources used must have
APA style citations and references. APA formatting is otherwise not required.
