After all presentations and reflection papers, students will create a strategic plan of their workspace issue that was identified in the week one lesson. This plan will consist of a synthesis of the key points and takeaways presented from the course material. Use the following seven main points as a framework to prepare your strategic plan:
Determine where you are and where you are going. This includes statement of the problem and gaining clarity of purpose. What is your destination?
Identify what is important. This includes values and actions that are in the best interest of the organization. What do you stand for? What does your organization stand for? These key elements will define the mission and vision.
Clearly define what you must achieve. What are the performance objectives? This answers the question of “What does success look like?”
Analysis – What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are your opportunities and threats posed by implementing this plan? Can you anticipate any collateral damage?
Implementation – How do you motivate subordinates? (think Hearts and Minds/ the Rider and the Elephant) Who is accountable for what? Is it a team effort or an individual effort? Keep it simple. What is a fair timeline? Are there different short-term action items vs. long-term action items?
Review and Measure – Does the form of the plan follow the function it is intended to achieve? Were there any key metrics or performance indicators you were tracking progress with? How can you tell if the process working in alignment with the organizational goals you outlined?
Adapt – Remember, if the plan does not yield the intended results, you must adapt. There is no shame in failure and failure is not defeat. If something doesn’t work, then scrap it and start over if needed. Remember, your destination does not change but the manner in which you arrive there may have to change.
Prepare your strategic plan using 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced. Your plan should be at least one page in length. Problem from week 1:
I am responsible for the school, and the thing I will be changing is the culture. Since COVID staff have become complacent. I started at this school about four months before COVID hit the school systems across the United States. My school was known for behavior problems, but we were able to change the culture in a few weeks, and behavior problems decreased. In only a few months, I transformed my school into one of the most sought schools in the district.
Then COVID hit. We had several teachers and students affected, which influenced staff and student performance. I decided to choose compassion over compliance. However, this year after COVID numbers declined, I was expecting us to regain the positive culture we had. Many teachers were set in their ways and adjusted to being complacent and complaining. It was also spreading. Realizing a change was not only coming but necessary, some teachers decided not to come back.
The ones that stay will be vital in changing the culture back. I was able to replace the teachers who left with some great teachers eager to work and have a positive attitude.
Our leadership team has developed a strategic plan to get the culture of our school back to pre-pandemic status by creating an environment conducive to learning, holding each other accountable, and celebrating short-term wins. As a committee, we felt the number one thing was to come up with a structure to ensure our school was conducive to learning. We also made sure that the administration was holding others accountable, but the staff was holding each other accountable. Finally, we want to celebrate all victories. It may seem like a small victory, but staff members like hearing their name in a positive light regardless of how small it may seem to us.
