Notes to help you
1) You should try to verify your statements and justify your arguments with references
to published work. According to normal convention, cite these works at the appropriate point in
your text e.g. Barbier et al., 2005 (do not use numbers). Provide the full reference in a
separate References section at the end of your document e.g.:
Barbier, S., Gosselin, F. & Balandier, P. (2008). Influence of tree species on
understory vegetation diversity and mechanisms involved – a critical review for temperate and
boreal forests. Forest Ecology and Management 254: 1-15.
It is important that anyone reading your document is able to obtain a copy of your cited literature
using only the information that you have provided.
2) Try to use publications that have been peer-reviewed – that is, ones that are published in a
reputable journal. If you find that you must cite non-peer-reviewed work (‘grey literature’) ensure
that it is available to anyone reading your work.
We appreciate that you will have difficulty accessing many science journals. A great deal
of information can be obtained by reading the abstracts of papers. News items are useful for
obtaining political information, such as quotas, but you should satisfy yourself that the
information is reliable. Government and non-government organisations can provide reliable data,
but be wary of charities which have their own agenda. The Food and Agriculture Organization of
the United Nations (FAO) is an example of a good source. Again, ensure that you provide the
reader with enough information to locate the source. If you want to cite a web page, use the
author, company etc, together with the date. Put the web address (URL) in the References
section. Here is an example of how you would cite a web page:
‘According to the FAO, the system of food legislation in the United Kingdom is extensive and
complex (FAO, 2015).’
You would then place the full URL in your References section thus:
FAO (2015). Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. National
aquaculture legislation overview. United Kingdom. http://www.fao.org/fishery/aquaculture/en
3) Do not use quotations from cited work. If you wish to explain the work of someone else, you
must use your own words.
4) Your References section will not contribute to the word count of your work, but your citations
will.
5) Answer each question separately and use headings to indicate which question is
being addressed. The relative lengths of each section are up to you, but ensure that you are
satisfied that you have fully answered each question/task.
6) Insert the number of words at the end of the document. You will be penalized if you go over
the total maximum number of permitted words. You will also be penalized if you go significantly
under.
