This assignment is designed to open your mind to review articles that summarize and explain primary scientific journal articles, familiarizing you with recent scientific writing describing advances in understanding humans, disease, & the natural world. You’ll be selecting & reading 2 topically related Scientific American articles (Evolved Human Uniqueness: Whether War is or Not in Our Nature & Evolved Human Uniqueness: Collective Intentionality and Human Morality), and composing a compare & contrast essay analyzing similarities and differences in their central points. A compare & contrast essay is not just a mere comparison; this type of essay requires a thorough point by point evaluation and analysis supported by specific data & findings. This type of essay format seeks to:
a.Demonstrate that one thing is more significant than another
b.Identify and clarify common misunderstandings
c.Provide a new way of doing or understanding something
d.State, elaborate, discuss something unknown
e.Support every claim with facts and accurate, reliable sources
Formatting: Double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font, 1 inch margins, & word count of 1200 [minimum]. Do not put text from the paper in quotation marks. Everything from your source material must be paraphrased in your own words and cited in-text. Paraphrasing is a process by which one thinks about the words and ideas of another author, in order to reconstruct those words and ideas in a new way. 7.Use APA format for your in-text citations& Bibliography section at the end of your review.
Introduction: Write an introduction summarizing the article in your own words, highlighting topics or sections from the article that were of particular interest to you, introducing the reader to the overall topic or subject of the research articles. Briefly outline the specific data, findings, or research conclusions that you’ll be comparing & contrasting. Begin with a ‘hook’ sentence and detail specific to your topic. Your hook can be a paraphrased quote, question, anecdote, anything you see fit for the particular research subject you’re writing about
Specific subjects to compare and contrast – of course, you can’t start writing about similarities and differences between two research articles out of the blue. That’s why you should set out a sentence or two to mention specific topics you’ll compare under the central theme
Thesis statement – this marks the tone of the essay and catches the reader’s attention. It focuses your ideas into one or two sentences. It should present the topic of your paper and also make a comment about your position in relation to the topic.
Body Paragraphs – The total number of body paragraphs will depend on the number of aspects or criteria you are comparing & contrasting between the two articles. As you brainstorm following your analysis of the two related articles, the chances are high that you’ll find a wide array of differences and similarities. However, your essay has to be well-crafted, and you can’t include absolutely everything you find – you must be selective & critical as you identify the best research findings, themes, or conclusions to compare & contrast. You’re not simply mentioning differences and similarities, one by one, and stating your opinion about them. Every detail you expand on should be supported by substantial evidence, statistics, conclusions, or data described in one or both articles. Here are some points of analysis to get you started: What were the central points, insights, and conclusions presented in each article? Why were the researchers motivated to address these central points or insights? How did the researchers discover or characterize these central points or insights? In what ways were the researcher’s methods similar or dissimilar between the two articles? Describe the thoughts that occurred to you while reading and analyzing each article, and whether these thoughts were similar or dissimilar, and why. Describe the topics or findings in each article that you thought were most interesting, or least interesting, and why .What future questions or un-addressed areas of inquiry did each author (or set of authors) describe? Where these similar or dissimilar?
Conclusion: Write a conclusion section that encapsulates the most important or meaningful things that you have learned while analyzing your articles. Did you make any mental or emotional connections between what you learned from each article and your everyday, familial, or career experiences? Allow yourself to ‘reach out’ a little in your contemplation, perhaps waxing philosophical if you’re so inclined. Include here connections to any additional reading or analysis of related scientific articles or paradigms. This may be one of the longer sections in your review, which is characteristic of scientific conclusions sections. Title: Brainstorm a weighty, humorous, witty, ironic, or satirical title for you essay, based on your unique style of analysis. The BCWC has a very useful and helpful handout specifically for crafting effective titles for research papers – stop by to ask for this. (Not included in word count)
Citations page: Cite all research sources you used in composing your essay in APA format in your Citations page at the very end of your essay. (Not included in your word count)
