For your second paper, I want you to join the conversation about grades. Based on what you’ve read, conversations with your friends, and your own experiences, please write about grades in higher education. Our authors have made the case that the ways most students are evaluated are problematic and should be changed. Do you agree? Disagree? Agree and disagree at the same time? Be careful to narrow your focus a bit as you begin. You’ll want to be able to say which specific ideas you agree (or disagree) with, and respond to those.
For instance, you might find the idea of grading contracts more workable than ‘ungrading.’ So narrow your focus to just that topic. Or maybe you think that Peter Elbow’s ideas about the ways grading undermines learning are so important you only want to write about why you agree with his premise. Or maybe, after reading everything and thinking about it, you decide the current system is easier to understand than the alternatives and so you think we should keep it. You choose! Just remember, if your topic is too broad (“grades are terrible and must be changed!”) you’ll get lost fast because you won’t know where to go with that.
You will need to find at least two sources from the library database to support your argument. (This is particularly important if you want to disagree with the argument that grading needs to be revised.)The other texts you’ll use are the articles and the other teachers’ grading explanations posted in Canvas.
Additionally, you can do some primary research (interviews), to see what your friends think if you’d like.
This is NOT a research paper, so please don’t gather up lots of sources and go wild with them. The sources you gather will be in support of your ideas. And of course, your “I Say” is the most important element. So, think about the conversation you want to enter—based on all our readings and discussion—remembering that the narrower and more focused your topic, the better your paper will be.
Paper Requirements
two sources you have found through our library databases
use of some of the readings from Canvas
MLA-style in-text citations and works cited page
4 to 6 pages long
due October 17
Important Considerations
your audience for the paper is our class (the other students and me), so you can assume we have read most of the articles, too
for the articles you found through research, be sure to provide enough background for your reader to understand your quotes, etc.
always introduce your quotations and provide some context for them
